As of 2017, Winnipeg Lost Dog Alert Inc. (WLDA) became a Registered Charity. What does this mean to us? It means that when you donate $5 or more to WLDA, we now get to give back to you by issuing a tax receipt for your donation.
Other than the odd fundraisers we put on, donations are an important part of our organization, because our service is FREE. They are used to purchase equipment such as trail cameras, microchip scanners, batteries, and memory cards. They are also put towards the cost of events we are invited to plus our own events, production of awareness materials for distribution at events as well as operational expenses including insurance, postage and website expenses, etc.
In 2019 we are looking for donations, not only for operating costs but also for our Chip Reader Fundraising Program.
Our Chip Reader Fundraising Program is to get enough donations to purchase chip readers and have them in different areas of our city. Our plan is to have a volunteer Chip Reader Director who will be in charge of who has one of our chip readers and trained volunteers all over our city using the chip readers.
Many Finders of dogs are willing to take the dog they found to their local vet to see if the dog has a microchip. If the dog is chipped and the information is up to date then the dog gets home fast. Sometimes, the dog can be either very skittish or an escape artist and get away from the Finder en route to the vets. Now the dog is lost in a different area and further away from its home.
If we had a chip reader in the area the dog was found, our Director would send one of our trained volunteers to the dog and scan it to see if it has a chip. The volunteer would then call the database company to either ask them to contact the owner or give our volunteer the owner information. The volunteer would then call the owner to let them know their dog was found and safe and where to pick it up.
This lost dog is now going home, thanks to owners chipping their pet and having their information up to date and us having a chip reader to find the owner.
